Joei Waldron, the Founder and Artistic Director of AXXIOM Dance Collective, was born in Washington DC to a family that hails from Grenada in the West Indies. Joei began playing violin at an early age and later undertook dance lesson while in high school.
Joei founded Axxiom in early 2003 while working at San Diego City College as dance instructor. Since then Joei has grown Axxiom into one of Southern California’s most recognized dance companies. Joei has created over 20 works for Axxiom with many receiving critical acclaim. Joei is the director of Axxiom’s home concert series Intimate Evening of Dance and its collaborative concert Unleashed. In May of 2005, Axxiom was awarded Bravo San Diego’s Performing Arts Organization of the month. Axxiom has been featured on KUSI News and FOX Morning News.
As a dancer, Joei has worked with the Renegades Dance Troupe, Debbie Toth & Dancers, Patricia Rincon Dance Collective, bkSOUL, Kruccial Elements, San Diego City College Performing Arts Department and San Diego Dance Theater’s Trolley Dances. While working with these various dance companies and institutions, Joei has had the opportunity to perform works for Faith Jensen-Ismay, Victoria Marks, Patricia Rincon, Alicia Rincon and Debbie Toth-Ward.
In 2003, as part of the Superbowl XXXVII pregame show, Joei performed as a dancer in “Santana and Friends” which featured recording artists Carlos Santana, Beyonce and Michelle Branch. Joei has also performed with recording artist Kevin Ray and served as choreographer for his “Got Juice” music video.
As a choreographer Joei has presented his work throughout San Diego and in Los Angeles, Arizona as well as internationally in Spain and Scotland. Joei’s works have been presented at the Word Famous Choreographers Concert, Arizona Dance Festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 55th International Choreographers Concert, Bravo San Diego Performing Arts Festival, Mix Match Dance Festival, Celebrate Dance of San Diego, Boulevard 3 Choreographers Challenge, Sea World San Diego, So Cal Dance Invitational and Traffic, directed by Tessandra Chavez.
Additionally, Joei has created works for San Diego City College, Palomar College, Riverside College and Southwestern College.
Joei’s piece “Windows Within” has been in the Axxiom repertory for 8 years. “Windows Within” has received critical acclaim by a variety of dance critics. In 2012, Windows Within was selected as a finalist for the 15th Annual Choreographers Festival held at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert, CA.
Currently, Joei is on faculty at Palomar College and in the summer serves as Dean of Students for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program. Joei has held teaching assignments and residencies at The Studio Academy, Lissette’s Dance Studio, San Diego City College, Riverside College, Southwestern College, University of California San Diego, El Camino College, Golden West College, City of Hopes High School and O’Farrell High School.
